Brenda Aguirre-Ortega is a PhD student in the School of Education (STEM track) at CU Boulder. Her research interests are in the areas of equity in mathematics education, teacher education, and decolonial approaches of teaching and learning mathematics. Brenda was born and raised in Ecuador, she holds a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering, and has worked as an engineer, translator, and math teacher. She is also a singer-song writer and holds a certificate in Ableton Live. Aguirre-Ortega is interested in working with math teachers to inquire about ways to challenge power structures in the math classrooms, through more humanizing and socially relevant approaches. One of these approaches is related to combining music and math teaching in elementary school grades, to support the learning of one subject through the other.
