The Colorado Environmental Justice Digital Storytelling Project is a partnership with the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE) to , which are used to better understand the environmental challenges communities face and which communities and people are disproportionately impacted by environmental crises. The pilot’s impact was published in the . The lab is expanding the scope of this partnership through student interns, workers and fellows.

Publicly launched in 2022, this podcast offers listeners the chance to learn from people who have made headlines for their successful storytelling, organizing and thinking about plastics, climate, social justice and much more. This show became the basis of the director’s award-winning book, (University of California Press, 2023). The podcast continues to interview a range of advocates and experts.
Transitioning our energy system away from fossil fuels changes more than energy infrastructure—it impacts workers, communities and cultures. The SAS Lab is proud to partner with NGOs such as and to amplify their expertise and co-create stories as part of the lab’s Imagining Just Transitions project. The lab’s director also contributed to on how journalists around the world might improve storytelling on this vital topic for conversation.
Preventing plastic pollution is of the SAS Lab’s major project areas. In addition to the podcast and award-winning book, we work with students, staff and faculty across campus on solutions to reducing plastic waste. Furthermore, the SAS Lab is working with colleagues at Colorado School of Mines to address plastic waste infrastructure in the state, as well as Latin America. Sustainable futures is the common learning experience and curricular mission of the University of Colorado Boulder. She teaches undergraduate courses on environmental communication and advanced storytelling on climate justice. She also co-directs and teaches the foundational course of the Graduate Certificate in Environmental Justice. Further, in 2022, she had the honor of working with an amazing steering committee, the CU Boulder Environmental Center and Mission Zero as the lead faculty coordinator for the Climate Across the Curriculum Training across campus, for which they developed a toolkit. Director Professor Pezzullo edits the International Environmental Communication Association’s flagship journal, .
Creative Climate Communication Consulting and Capacity Building happens through interlocking directorate organizations and C3BC. With colleagues across campus, Director Professor Pezzullo has co-advised and co-facilitated climate-related trainings for arctic scientists, climate scientists, educators, government employees, journalists and media creatives. One project was creating the youth guide , for which Pezzullo facilitated a peer review process by fourth-graders, for fourth-graders, on how to talk about and represent climate solutions with the greatest impact. Another involved serving as faculty lead on a Climate Across the Curriculum training and toolkit.
