2022-2023 Graduating Honors Scholars

Louis Balas

Louis is graduating Summa Cum Laude with a B.A in Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology with a minor in Space. He completed his honors thesis investigating neural crest developmental genetics in zebrafish and will continue that research with the Medeiros lab this summer. He also has had the opportunity to conduct analytical chemistry research in the natural products space and presented that research at the 2023 Emerald Conference this past Spring. After graduating, he plans to work for a few years before pursuing a PhD in molecular biology or analytical chemistry. He is grateful to have been involved in the Honors Program because it connected him with like-minded peers and professors and allowed him to engage with topics outside his normal coursework. Some of his favorite honors courses include Honors Diversity Seminar, taught by Dr. Alphonse Keasley, and Environmental Justice, taught by Dr. Abby Hickcox. He would like to thank his friends, family, and mentors for their continual support and give special thanks to the directors of the Honors Program for creating an environment dedicated to learning and community.

Lilli Herpers

I am graduating Summa Cum Laude with a B.A. in Sociology and a Media Studies minor. I completed my sociology honors thesis on community building on social media. I really enjoyed the community and honors events the Honors Scholars program has to offer. I had incredible experiences studying abroad in Denmark, France, and Costa Rica during the spring of 2022. During my internship at International Medical Relief (IMR) in Denver, I designed a program on the national and international impact of IMR’s medical missions. I helped my supervisor launch their new website, created social media content, and interviewed team leaders on their experiences. I hope to either continue sociological research or be a social media specialist after graduation. Sko buffs!

Noah Mahoney

I am graduating with a double major in English Literature and Spanish, as well as a minor in Geography. This year, I wrote and defended an honors thesis proposing the application of neurodiverse perspectives as an interpretive lens through which texts can be analyzed, with an emphasis on autism. After graduation, I will continue to develop this interpretive lens during my studies at CU’s MA program in English Literature. In addition to writing my honors thesis, my greatest memories at CU have been winning the Joanne Easley Arnold essay scholarship, serving on the Honors Journal editorial board, and performing as part of One Note Stand A Cappella.

Samantha Millison (December 2022)

I have had an amazing experience at CU Boulder and in the Honors Program. The program has given me numerous opportunities in my undergraduate college career, and has supported me in upholding my GPA to graduate the College of Arts and Sciences with distinction. I have been able to enroll in a variety of honors courses that have allowed me to expand my knowledge, and I have been able to attend a multitude of engaging events that have helped me to better integrate myself into the Honors Program community. After graduation, I plan to return to CU Boulder this summer, as I have been accepted into the Masters + Teaching Licensure Program! My favorite honors memory was the Distinguished Lecture with Myles Osborne, it was a very enriching and eye-opening experience for me! Thank you to everyone, both in the Honors Program and beyond, who has supported me.

Gennah Penalosa

Gennah is graduating with honors and distinction with a B.S.B.A. in Business Administration with an emphasis in Finance. Throughout her college career, Gennah has become highly involved in numerous student organizations and extracurricular activities, which helped her further grow her leadership and teamwork skills. She occupied the positions of social media director of Her Campus, treasurer of Beta Alpha Psi, finance chair of Women in Business, secretary of the UMC Board, and public relations chair of Asian American Literature Association (AALA). As a Filipina American, Gennah has been involved with Asian American InterVarsity (AAIV) since her freshman year, and she worked as a social media intern for the Bulosan Center for Filipino Studies. In addition to the Honors Scholars Program, Gennah has been a part of the Diverse Scholars Program, Leeds Mentoring Program, and Leeds Honors Program. Despite being a business student, Gennah's involvement in the Honors Scholars Program has been very memorable; she especially enjoyed getting to chat with others during the Coffee Hours/Mood Boosts! During her free time, Gennah enjoys playing the acoustic guitar, hiking, and exploring new places. Gennah is very grateful for the memories she has made here at CU, and for all the amazing people she has met in the past four years. If she were to share one main takeaway from her college experience, it would be to gain confidence in yourself and pursue life with no regrets. Sko Buffs!

Cat Simmons

I’m graduating magna cum laude with a double major in Biochemistry and MCDB. I was also the Community Service Coordinator on the Honors Program Student Advisory Board during my final year at CU. This role has allowed me to better connect with other students in the Honors Scholars Program and has granted me a more involved role with the program. Overall, Honors Scholars has given me the opportunity to take a more interdisciplinary approach to my college education, with the unique courses offered by the program and the diverse events provided. I’m glad that during my time at CU I have been able to seek out a variety of opportunities that the university has available to its students. Particularly, my experience working in undergraduate MCDB research in the Copley Lab has been invaluable in the growth of my interests and future goals. During my last semester, I completed writing and defending an Honors Thesis for my research project in the lab, which has been one of the greatest tests of my capabilities as well as one of my greatest accomplishments in college. After graduation, I plan on taking some time to further explore my research interests by working as a lab technician, and eventually pursuing a PhD in the coming years. Overall, I’m beyond happy with my experience at CU Boulder. I’m so grateful for the friends that I’ve met, the clubs and organizations that I am a part of, and the education that has prepared me for my future.

Mike Tran

Mike Tran has been part of the Honors Scholars program at CU-Boulder for the last two years. Throughout his time here, he has worked on a range of projects, from cataloging COVID-19 travel restrictions around the world to contributing to a World Bank damage report in the aftermath of the 2023 Turkey-Syria earthquake. He’s also gotten the chance to study abroad twice, spending five weeks in Belgium in the Summer of 2021 and last fall in Oman. After graduating from CU, he plans on attending graduate school at the University of Virginia to pursue a Master of Public Policy as he chases his dream of working in the Foreign Service.

Sarah Way

I majored in International Affairs with a concentration in Africa and the Middle East and minors in Political Science and French. In addition to my time with the Honors Scholars program, I was also a part of Buffs Teach Abroad and French Club. I have had some wonderful opportunities here at CU, including spending a semester abroad in Morocco and writing and defending an Honors Thesis. I am grateful for my time in the Honors Program, which, in addition to offering small, discussion-based classes, has also provided me with countless opportunities to connect with students and faculty across multiple departments. Upon graduation, I will be taking a gap year before pursuing a master’s degree in international development policy.
