Operations Analyst 1, Operations Specialist, & Engineering Research Intern

THE POSITION:

The Treatment Plant Services Department currently has an opening in the Technology Development and Research Division. This opening is part of the Research series, which includes; Operations Analyst 1, Operations Specialist, & Engineering Research Intern positions.

The distinction between the positions are:

Engineering Research Intern: An excellent opportunity to develop Research experience working for a nationally-recognized wastewater treatment facility in the public sector. The salary range for this position is: $38,793 - $53,341.

Operations Specialist: Within a team of engineers, researches improvements in the operations of the District's programs including the four wastewater treatment facilities. Conducts research projects to optimize program operations, develops new innovative technologies, verifies operational data for purchase or design of new technologies, or reduces the risk of regulatory noncompliance. The salary range for this position is: $59,682 - $82,063.

Operations Analyst 1: Researches improvements in the operations of the District's programs including the four wastewater treatment facilities. Conducts research projects to optimize program operations, develops new innovative technologies, verifies operational data for purchase or design of new technologies, or reduces the risk of regulatory noncompliance. The salary range for this position is: $67,640 - $93,004.

 

Additional Information: 

  • Temporary position, up to six months.
  • Full-time, up to 40 hours per week.
  • Any offer of employment will be conditional based on the successful completion of references, a driving record review, and criminal background check.
  • For some positions, the successful completion of a pre-employment medical evaluation is required.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

(The essential functions listed below are not intended to reflect all duties that may be assigned to these classifications. The District may augment duties and/or essential functions at its discretion. Additionally, some incumbents may not perform all Essential Functions)

Engineering Research Intern: 

  1. Assist with research projects as assigned.
  2. Assistance in the facility will include monitoring and evaluation of full-scale fermentation, monitoring of biological phosphorous removal process, and evaluation of process instrumentation.
  3. Candidates will work with engineering, operations, and maintenance to design, conduct, and troubleshoot testing programs.
  4. Provide technical research, writing, and editing skills to generate testing reports. Present and discuss findings from testing with managers.

Operations Specialist: 

  1. Plan and conduct wastewater treatment research projects as assigned.
  2. Interact with District personnel related to testing and correlation of research results with on-going operations.
  3. Develop testing protocols and experiments based on research objectives and modify as needed based on interpretation of results.
  4. Conduct data analysis and statistical interpretation to test research hypotheses.
  5. Write research reports and present findings at conferences and to colleagues.
  6. Manage research within required budget and time constraints.

Operations Analyst 1: 

  1. Develop, plan and conduct wastewater treatment research projects as assigned.
  2. Interact with District personnel related to testing and correlation of research results with on-going operations.
  3. Develop new analytical and measurement techniques as required for collecting appropriate data.
  4. Conduct data analysis and statistical interpretation to test research hypotheses.
  5. Organize and coordinate the use of various lab research spaces at multiple District locations.
  6. Write research reports, journal articles, and present findings at research conferences.
  7. Manage research within the required budget and time constraints.
  8. Prepare and present data analysis to consultants in support of capital improvement projects.

 

QUALIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE, AND TRAINING GUIDELINES:

(Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying)

Engineering Research Intern: 

  • A current or recently graduated student with a Bachelor's or Master's degree in civil engineering, chemical engineering, environmental engineering or other science.
  • Coursework in wastewater treatment is desired.

Operations Specialist: 

  • Two (2) years or more of responsible experience in conducting research related to environmental engineering or sciences.
  • College-level coursework in, chemistry, biology, microbiology, quantitative analysis, laboratory methodologies, hydrology, environmental science, ecology, or related fields.

Operations Analyst 1: 

  • Three (3) years or more of increasingly responsible experience in conducting research related to environmental engineering or sciences.
  • College-level coursework in, chemistry, biology, microbiology, quantitative analysis, laboratory methodologies, hydrology, environmental science, ecology, or related fields.

In addition to the Experience and Training Guidelines listed above, some positions may prefer Master of Science degree in environmental engineering, engineering, or science with an emphasis on chemistry, biology, or microbiology, or related field.

 

CERTIFICATION AND LICENSURE:

Upon selection, candidates must possess and maintain a valid State issued driver's license.
