After writing sociology textbooks and poetry for 27 years, Irene Blea (PhDSoc) has published three novels. Her latest book is Daughters of the West Mesa (APQ Press). Irene retired as chairperson of Mexican American Studies from California State University, Los Angeles, in 1998.

St. Louis, Mo., resident Charles H. “Chip” Fendell (InfoSys) was directly affected by kidney disease and received two life-saving kidney transplants. After his experience, he began working with the National Kidney Foundation to educate the public about kidney disease. Last year he was elected to the foundation’s board of directors. Charles is a partner at the Thompson Coburn law firm and has been voted into the Best Lawyers in America since 2005.

After serving for 28 years in the U.S. Navy (active and reserve time), James Michael Davis (Econ) retired in December with the rank of commander. The book is a 1,000-item, annotated bibliography documenting articles, books and dissertations published since 1920. It brings a multidisciplinary perspective to African American spirituals. Writer and filmmaker Shane Kuhn (Psych), author of The Intern’s Handbook, is releasing the second book in his John Lago assassin series, Hostile Takeover, on July 14. The New York Post called The Intern’s Handbook, which is expected to become a feature film from Sony Pictures starring Dave Franco, “a sexy, darkly comic thriller.” Shane and his family split their time among Massachusetts, Colorado and California.

Christine Bartel (Econ) was named president and CEO of home health-care provider McLaren Homecare Group of Davison, Mich. Earlier in her career she worked for Standard & Poor’s and Dun & Bradstreet. She also started a home-care services company in Greenwood Village, Colo., with branch locations in Colorado Springs and Fort Collins. In 2008 she sold that company to a private equity firm.
