Tonight! Dr. Sonja Arntzen to Give a Talk on Her Recent Collaborative Translation of "The Sarashina Diary"

Join the Center for Asian Studies and the Department of Asian Languages and Civilizations tonight as we welcome Dr. Sonja Arntzen, Professor Emerita of the University of Toronto, to campus to give a public lecture on "The Sarashina Diary: A New Collaborative Translation and Study." The talk will begin at 5:00 p.m. in Eaton Humanities 250.

Dr. Arntzen recently co-authored a new translation of the eleventh-century Sarashina nikki with Professor Moriyuki Itō of Gakushūin University. The Sarashina Diary: A Woman's Life in Eleventh-Century Japan (Columbia University, 2014) recounts the life of a Japanese noblewoman over a forty-year period, offers a portrait of the writer as reader, and explores the power of reading to shape one's expectations and aspirations in life. In this talk, Dr. Arntzen will discuss the diary itself and the rather unusual process of collaboration that produced the translation and study.
