International Film Series, featuring four Japanese films
CAS is please to announce the following event:
On Sept. 23 - 26, the International Film Series will screen four rare, not-on-DVD, Japanese films released by the Nikkatsu Studio, which is celebrating its 100th anniversary.
This will likely be the only chance area residents may ever have to see these films, and the screenings are free! The films range from a very rare samurai comedy from the 1930s to two current films that screened at Sundance within the last few years.
Tange Sazen and the Pot Worth a Million Ryo (1935), alters the traditional superhero image with its one-eyed one-armed protagonist. The screening will be in Muenzinger Auditorium on Sunday, Sept. 23, at 4pm only.
Suzaki Paradise - Red Light District (1956), tells the story of a young Japanese couple who end up living at the outskirts of the Suzaki red-light district in Tokyo. The screening will be in Muenzinger Auditorium on Monday, Sept. 24, at 7pm only.
Megane "Glasses" (2007) follows an anxious Japanese career woman who escapes her stressed urban life for a remote island vacation, only to find the island full of strange inhabitants. The screening will be in Muenzinger Auditorium on Tuesday, Sept. 25, at 7pm only.
One Million Yen Girl (2008), tells the story of a 21-year-old recently released from prison, and her struggle to deter neighborhood gossip and family conflicts. The screening in Muenzinger Auditorium on Wednesday, Sept. 26, at 7pm only.
Of special note: on Monday, Sept. 24th, Laurel Rodd, past Director of the Center for Asian Studies and Professor of Japanese, will introduce a representative of the Consulate-General of Japan at the 7pm screening of SUZAKI PARADISE: RED LIGHT. Faye Kleeman, Graduate Director of the Japanese Program in the Department of Asian Languages and Civilizations and a member of the CAS Board, will give a short 5 minute introduction that will put the centenary celebration of the Nikkatsu studios into perspective, and she will also hold a Q&A after the film.
All screenings are held in the Muenzinger Auditorium just west of the Folsom Football Stadium. For more information, please visit .
These screenings are being made possible thanks to a co-sponsorship by The Japan Foundation and the Consulate-General of Japan at Denver, with the CU Center for Asian Studies.
