Dan Larremore wins a 2022 Alan T. Waterman Award
A message from BioFrontiers Director, Roy Parker, and CSO, Leslie Leinwand:
We write to share the wonderful news that Dan Larremore has been named by the NSF as one of three 2022 Alan T. Waterman Award winners.Ìý
This is a truly outstanding honor. The Waterman Award is the , and comes with a $1M grant to support the winners' research. Only two or three awards are made each year, nationwide, and past winners have gone on to win all manner of major awards, including Nobel Prizes. CU has only ever had two other Waterman Award winners, Prof. Kristi Anseth (in ChBE) in 2004 and Prof. Eric Cornell (in Physics) in 1997.
Dan is being recognized for his world-class research on computational epidemiology, and in particular for his work on the COVID-19 pandemic. His research investigated questions such as: How should the first doses of a scarce vaccine be targeted to minimize deaths or infections? What role could widely available rapid testing play in mitigating viral transmission prior to the arrival of vaccines? and his results have appeared in the very best journals in the world, including Science, NEJM, Science Advances, among others. But crucially, his research has also helped shape real public health policy at organizations like the World Health Organization (WHO), the US CDC, the California Dept. of Health, the U.S. Dept. of Veteran Affairs, and, thankfully, CU itself.
Please join us in congratulating Dan on this outstanding recognition of his work. Congratulations Dan! We are so proud of you!
Leslie and Roy
