This summer 2019 the Smead Department of Aerospace Engineering Sciences (AES) will move into the new Aerospace Engineering Sciences Building on the East Campus. In addition to accommodating our expanding research programs, the new PILOT facility will enable us to expand on our capabilities to deliver our unique hands-on curriculum. The AES chair Brian Argrow and associate chairs David Klaus and Dennis Akos will discuss the logistics of the upcoming move and what AES undergraduate and graduate students can expect with the kickoff of the fall semester. We will discuss how the AES undergraduate curriculum was created from a deep-dive in engineering education literature coupled with aerospace industry input and reviews. The curriculum plan for the upcoming academic year will be discussed along with our effort to chart the future of the AES curriculum. This future includes the integration of new laboratory capabilities and increased curriculum flexibility by offering core courses throughout the year (e.g., offering courses off-sequence). We will discuss the creation of the Aerospace 鶹Ժ Committee for Undergraduate Success (ASC-US; pronounced “ask us”), a representative group of undergraduates to provide continuous feedback to the department on curriculum, climate, and other issues as they come up. Finally, we will discuss the importance of AIAA membership for students and practitioners.
